Cyprus

Overview

Cyprus has one of the Mediterranean's oldest civilizations, stretching back over 10,000 years. The first country to come under Christian administration, Cyprus retains a strong Greek Orthodox culture to this day as well as works of Byzantine art and numerous Roman ruins. Indeed, Cyprus boasts arguably the best Roman mosaics in the Mediterranean.

As a tourist destination, Cyprus offers something for everyone - fabulous golden beaches, outstanding historical & religious monuments and artefacts dotted around Cyprus, together with the pleasure of sampling a glass of Cypriot wine.

Weather

Cyprus enjoys a great Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine year round.

Cyprus's summer is typically dry and can be hot, with temperatures peaking up to 36°C in Nicosia. Elsewhere in Cyprus, temperatures reach an average peak of 26-27°C.The heat is often mitigated, however, by breezes coming in off Cyprus's coast.

In Cyprus's winter warm clothes are a good idea and a light sweater is ideal for Cyprus's cooler months in May, June, September and October.

Main resorts & attractions

Cyprus's eastern coast offers fine white sandy beaches with clean and safe bathing and its deeper water just off Cyprus's shore provides good snorkelling and diving. On Cyprus's southern south, the beaches tend to be of grey fine sand.

Two of Cyprus's most famous beaches are Phinikoudes Beach and Agia Thekla Beach.

For those interested in Cyprus's Roman heritage, Cyprus doesn't disappoint. The Tombs of the Kings on Cyprus's western shore not far from Paphos are carved out of solid rock. Also nearby are some of Cyprus's numerous Roman villas with amazingly detailed mosaics depicting mythological scenes.

Limassol is the centre of Cyprus's wine-making industry and a bustling holiday resort on Cyprus's southern coast.

Amongst other sights in this region of Cyprus, Nicosia offers an old Venetian fortress made from sandstone as well as the Old Archbishop's Palace.

For anyone wanting to escape Cyprus's beaches and historical heritage, take a trip into Cyprus's cooler heartland, into the Troodos Mountains. Cyprus's only mountain range, the Troodos rise to a height of almost 2000m providing skiing from New Year to early March.
