Italy

Overview

Famous for its wine, food and rich history, Italy also offers stunning scenery, the backdrop for skiers, hikers, walkers and cyclists and all lovers of Italian Nature. And that's not to mention Italy's 5310 miles of coastline where holiday-makers can relax on Italy's fine beaches and swim in the warm waters off Italy's shores.

Italy is also as well known for its cultural scene, with the operas staged in Milan rated as some of the best in the world.

With its moderate climate, Italy is good to visit at all times of year.

Weather

Italy's climate is temperate, although there are variations in some of Italy's regions. In the summer months, Italy's north is warm with some occasional rain; Italy's central region can experience humidity; and Italy's south can see some very and dry hot days. In the winter, northern regions can be cold whilst the southern areas see average temperatures of between 10-20°C.

Spring or Autumn are the best times of year to visit Italy. It's possible to swim in the waters off Italy between June and September. The Alps are best walked between June and September; Italy's ski season begins in December and lasts up until April.

Main resorts & attractions

For the Arts, look no further than Italy's well-known cultural hot-spots - Venice, Rome and Florence. And, of course, where else to go in Italy for opera than Milan?

For a chance to explore Italy's historical past, Rome is top of the list, location of the world-famous Coliseum, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Nero's Circus Maximus. Rome also houses The Vatican, home of the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica.

Visit Naples, nearby Pompei, Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius for a fascinating insight into a slice of ancient Roman life frozen in time. And when you're done, relax on Italy's enchanting Island of Capri.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is also another huge tourist draw to Italy, as is nearby Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance. Here, you can visit some of Italy's most famous museums and churches and wander down the famous Ponte Vecchio.

For outdoor lovers, Italy also provides a wealth of choice. The Italian Alps offer excellent skiing in winter, and hiking and walking in warmer months. The lakes in central Lombardy - Maggiore, Como and Garda among them - attract a lot of visitors to Italy at all times of the year. And, of course, for worshippers of the sun, there are the infinite number and variety of Italy's beaches, along the full length of its coastline.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is an autonomous region of Italy. Sicily has its own rich culture in the arts, culture, cuisine and language, different from that of Italy, and is an intriguing place to visit, demonstrating some fine examples of Baroque architecture.
